Act Local

Why Act Local?

Think Globally, Act Locally was a common t-shirt and bumper sticker slogan in the 70’s, with its roots going back to the Friends of the Earth, an environmental group still active today. Not quite as eternally relevant as Question Authority, it’s still important and a personal favorite.

Like many people, my interest in politics – what I like to think and talk about – centers on international and national issues: global economy, foreign affairs, diplomatic and military action (I’m no pacifist, but please, diplomacy first), the freedoms guaranteed in our Bill of Rights, liberal society. And these are the issues I hope to blog about.

The question for us is how do we take ideas & ideals and get them translated into policy. That’s where local politics becomes important. We live in a representative democracy. We can skip the high school civics lesson and just remember it’s all about electing people who will work towards the policies and goals you find important.

Interested in immigration policy; the effectiveness of the surge; whether the Democratic presidential candidates will harm each other sufficiently to elect John McCain? Great! Want to do something about it? Help organize our precincts right here in Tredyffrin; support and elect our local candidates; build a grassroots base. I chose the moniker Act Local because it all starts here. As we think and discuss (I hope future posts will elicit an occasional comment) the big picture, I will be careful to remember that our work is right here.

Act Local is correct when he/she advocates being involved in local politics. Do you want to see your local community be more green, pedestrian and bicycle friendly and have strong policies on storm water regulations that are enforced? Then you need to be involved locally. Want your county, state and federal government to be more accountable, more ethical and responsive? Then you need to be involved in the local Democratic Party.

How can acting locally affect county state and federal officials? It is the local organized democrats who inform voters about what happening in Tredyffrin (see the TTDEMS newsletter the Flash). They also get petitions signed, distribute signs, drop literature at voters homes, distribute voter registration and absentee ballot requests and sample ballots.

The republicans have developed a strong “farm team” program that moves aspiring politicians up the ladder. Locally, the Republican Party prefers to have their people only serve for 2 terms before running higher office or resigning so they can either elect or appoint some one who does want to move up.

Acting locally can prevent these conservative politicians from moving up the policies ladder. Just think if local activist had stopped Rick Santorum before he ran for the US Senate.

By acting locally you can help stop the next round of Santorum, like Guy Ciarrocchi. Guy is running against former Tredyffrin Township Supervisor Paul Drucker for the 157th Pa House seat. Here is some background on Guy. He is the former head of Bush and Chaney’s re-election campaign in southeast PA. He was also a major fundraiser for Bush/Chaney. Remember Rick Santorum’s failed re-election bid in 2006? Guy ran that campaign and currently he serves as Jim Gerlach’s chief of Staff.

Want change? Then you need to roll up your sleeves and get to work, locally. Go to www.TTDEMS.com and click on the volunteer button.
